A knocked-out permanent tooth is one of the few true dental emergencies where minutes matter. Acting quickly in the first 30 minutes gives the tooth its best chance of being saved. Here is what to do, and what to avoid, on the way to a same-day dentist.

What Should You Do in the First Few Minutes?

Handle the tooth carefully, keep it moist, and get to a dentist quickly. These five steps protect the delicate cells on the root that a dentist needs in order to put the tooth back.

  1. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part). Never touch the root.
  2. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline for a few seconds. Do not scrub it, and do not use soap.
  3. If you can, place the tooth back in its socket and bite gently on clean gauze to hold it in place.
  4. If you cannot reinsert it, keep it moist. Store it in a cup of milk, in a tooth-preservation solution, or (for adults) tucked inside the cheek. Do not store it in plain water.
  5. Call an emergency dentist right away.

Can a Knocked-Out Tooth Really Be Saved?

Often, yes. The best outcomes happen when the tooth is placed back within about 30 to 60 minutes and kept moist the whole time. The longer the tooth stays dry, the lower the chance it can be saved, which is why fast action and a same-day visit matter so much.

What If It Is a Child’s Baby Tooth?

Baby (primary) teeth are usually not put back in, because doing so can harm the developing permanent tooth underneath. Still call a dentist so they can check for other injuries and tell you the right next step.

When Should You Go to the ER Instead?

Go to the emergency room first if there is bleeding that will not stop, a possible broken jaw, a head injury, or any loss of consciousness. For the tooth itself, an emergency dentist is the right place to go.
