What Is a Tooth Extraction?

An extraction is the removal of a tooth that can no longer be saved or repaired. A simple extraction lifts out a tooth that is fully visible, while a surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gumline or still partly covered by bone.

We only recommend removal after we have looked at whether the tooth can be restored. When it can be saved, we tell you so and explain that option first.

Who Needs a Tooth Extraction?

Removal is usually the right call when a tooth is causing harm and repair is no longer realistic.

What Are My Tooth Replacement Options?

A tooth that comes out does not have to stay missing. The three main ways to replace it are a removable partial denture, a fixed bridge and a dental implant. Each has its own cost, timeline and care routine, and the right choice depends on your bone, your budget and the teeth around the space. This short video walks through all three, and we are happy to talk through which fits your situation once the site has healed.

What Should I Expect During an Extraction?

1

Evaluate the Tooth

We review imaging with you and confirm that removal is the best option before anything begins.

2

Numb and Remove

We numb thoroughly, test the area first and add more anesthetic any time you need it.

3

Medication On-Site

Antibiotics and pain medication are dispensed at the office, even during evening appointments.

4

Next-Day Check-In

We call the following day to see how you slept, how healing looks and whether you need anything.

Comfort First

Will the Extraction Hurt?

Our goal is that you feel pressure and nothing sharp. We use a layered numbing approach, pause whenever you raise a hand and never rush the appointment. Written aftercare instructions go home with you, and our team is reachable if something does not feel right that evening.

How Do I Recover From a Tooth Extraction?

Most patients feel noticeably better within a few days, and the aftercare steps are simple: protect the clot, rest, use ice and stick to soft foods at first. This short video walks through what healing looks like day by day and what to avoid so recovery stays on track. If anything feels off, call us and we will take a look.

What Else Do Patients Ask About Tooth Extractions?

Most patients feel noticeably better within a few days. Following the aftercare instructions closely makes the biggest difference.

Yes. Once the site heals we can discuss an implant, bridge or partial denture to fill the space.

Dry socket happens when the healing clot is disturbed. Avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the first few days, and follow the aftercare sheet we send home with you.

Stick to soft foods for the first 24 to 48 hours, then gradually return to your normal diet as comfort allows.

We use layered numbing and a calm, paced approach. If you need additional help, ask us what options are available for your visit.
